Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs), a subset of pervasive developmental disorders, are a group of developmental disabilities that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges. These disorders range from relatively mild impairments to significant disabilities that impair an individual’s ability to learn, communicate, interact and participate in society. They are considered “spectrum” disorders because there are differences in age of onset of symptoms, their level of severity, and their exact nature.
